One of the most famous staples of the Italian repertoire, opera Rigoletto, premiered in 1851 and was written based on Victor Hugo's play "The King Amuses Himself". The play itself and later its opera adaptation is - among other things - above all a critical probe bringing the image of a vulgar and obscene society in contrast to the unconditional love of father and daughter - and therefore was under very strong pressure of censorship in its time. And it is this "lowness" and misery - perhaps only with a less dirty cover - that is a synonym that persists to this day.
