Peter Valentovič: Górecki Takes You to Completely Different World

On Saturday, November 20th, Kunsthalle presents Górecki’s Symphony No. 3 – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs that will be conducted by the chief conductor Peter Valentovič who have studied and prepared, along with the orchestra, this  unique piece of modern classic music. In the interview he reveals why it is so unique and millions of records were sold? And why other than classic music lovers should get to know the work?

Symphony of Sorrowful Songs had an interesting fate. At first it was not accepted by music critics only to become subsequently a hit of contemporary classic music. What makes it special?

The work is unique with its atmosphere, beautiful almost meditative music, pleasant tonality and recurring motives that bring listeners into a totally different dimeson. It contains exquisite colours and unforgettable music motives that are simple and hence accessible for different age groups and generations. That’s why the composition has gained attention of a wide audience.

Opera orchestra rarely does modern classic music. Preparing such symphony or orchestral composition, why is it different for a theatre orchestra?

The symphony contains soprano part, so it reminds of an opera. Opera orchestra is used to accompany singers. Specifically, this symphony is typical for its slow tempos. Its technical complexity is not in its sophisticated sections, but rather in expression, colours, and very long music curves and gradations. Music form is different from opera works.

Soloist Slávka Zámečníková said that when singing Górecki’s Symphony, it is always difficult to hold back emotions it brings. Is it the same for a conductor interpreting the work?

Yes, especially with this work. Texts are very profound, sad, and music of this symphony expresses very strongly these sentiments. When interpreting the symphony, it is difficult not to get emotional. I think, it is not possible with this work.

It is the first time Košice have the chance to listen to Górecki’s Symphony. In your opinion, why other than classic music lovers shouldn’t miss it on Saturday, November 20th?

Also, because it is rarely presented at concert halls but especially for that it is a totally different piece compared to those people usually listen at classic music concerts. With its originality, I mean its musical side, it will attract a very wide audience. Try to listen to the beginning of Part II of this immensely emotionally strong symphony. It will lead you to a new world, you’ll hear colours and moods you’ll not expect, hadn’t you listened to the symphony before. A huge experience.
