Through the project The Nutcracker for the Blind, we aim to make ballet accessible to people with complete or severe visual impairment by combining the senses of touch and sound. The main goal of the project is to connect the functioning senses of a blind or visually impaired person (touch and hearing) and use this connection to compensate for the absent or limited function of sight.
An integral part of the ballet performance is a specially developed app with audio description, synchronised with the music, that provides a detailed narration of the action on stage. This allows visually impaired audience members to experience and imagine the visual atmosphere of the ballet through sound.
